Using Image Processing

Here are some examples of some of the ways teachers and students are using image processing across the curriculum.

• Students used image processing to measure angles as part of a geometry unit. Since our school is under renovation, taking construction pictures with the digital camera provided interesting angles to measure.
• Students used digital images as "Mystery Images" as part of morning warm ups.
• As part of a beginning unit on Geography and Mapping, students used image processing to plan a cross-country tour with a rock band. Students also built a tour-mobile to scale and used many image processing skills to plan the vehicle.
• Students made brochures to advertise the rock band tour.They used a digital camera to take their photos to import into the brochures.
• Students applied filters and color tables to alter their own digital portraits.
• Students explored the relationship of the LUT and surface plots as they create 3-D models of their names.
• Students learned about volcanoes as they complete several image processing lessons from the Earth Science section.
• Students examined digital images and learned about how color images are created. They used image processing to create color composites from an RGB stack.
• Students created "mystery messages" and decoded them by manipulating the LUT (lookup table).
• Students learned to use NIH Image software to make linear measurements while exploring insect anatomy.
• Students will use NIH Image software to make measurements of distances between cities on a Virginia map.
• Students used NIH Image software to illustrate their knowledge of series and parallel circuits. Students created a stack showing what it takes to make the lightbulbs light up in each situation. After animating, they made a montage of their stack. This enabled them to print and display a paper copy their work.
